Coming up next…Trinity Sunday!
On the liturgical calendar, Pentecost Sunday is always followed by Trinity Sunday, a reminder that God’s gift of the Holy Spirit poured out on Pentecost actually means something for our lives.
The trouble is that there is nothing in our scripture that establishes the Holy Trinity as a doctrine that we as Christians are asked to subscribe to.
All we have are hints and whispers of a God who is made known to us as the one who creates, the one who saves, and the one who continues to pour out God’s power upon us. Though this is quite a long quote, it’s worth taking some time with:
The doctrine of the Trinity was not dreamed up in a theological think tank but was articulated by actual worshiping and serving Christians who, under stress and in the face of questions and challenges, were sweating it out to say with clarity just why they were willing to live a life that looked foolish to others, caring for widows and orphans, suffering persecution, and spilling their own blood — all of it for the wild notion that the Spirit had gathered them into the life of the God, the God who in Christ was making peace with the world. (Tom Long)
Each year on Trinity Sunday the lectionary offers us a number of scriptures that, like the one that we will read from Matthew this Sunday, point to God who is revealed in multiple ways. These are the scriptures for Trinity Sunday this year:
Matthew 28:16-20
Genesis 1:1-2, 4a
Psalm 8
2 Corinthians 13:11-13
I hope you will take time to read these before Sunday, and I look forward to seeing you in church!
With gratitude,
Mary Beth
