Weekly Greeting - October 10, 2025
Last Sunday’s worship service looked fine on paper.
By that I mean that the songs selected for the service were thoughtful, appropriate, familiar, and singable. The scripture was appropriate to World Communion Sunday. Everyone knew where they were supposed to be and when, and what they were supposed to do when they got there. There was no reason to think that the service was anything but solid.
And then the Holy Spirit showed up.
I hope that you felt it. I hope that you noticed it. There was a connection and an energy in the room that was, well, palpable. It was a testament to the Holy Spirit’s power to take what we each have to offer and turn our gifts into God’s glory. And it wasn’t just the folks up front who had something to offer — it was everyone in the Sanctuary. Some of us offered enthusiastic thanks to God, some of us offered our tears. Some of us offered comfort and some of us offered generous hospitality. Some of us offered our voices and some of us offered our centered selves. But we all brought something and we all offered it to God.
And God was glorified.
The story of Jesus’s transfiguration, found in three of our gospels, is a reminder that dazzling experiences are God’s gift to us. Even so, we must eventually come back down the mountain to the routine of our daily lives. But the dazzling experiences remain in our hearts to remind us that God is with us always, even in the routine, if we will but pay attention.
I pray that you will see God in new ways this week.
In the unity of Christ,
Mary Beth
