Weekly Greeting - March 27, 2026

I was so grateful to escape to warmer climes last week with Jay.

It was about 36 degrees when we left Nashville on Tuesday morning.  When we arrived in Phoenix we found ourselves in the middle of an extreme heat advisory, which was actually fine with me because although I don’t spend too much time in the sun I do like a warm day.

The purpose of our trip was relaxation.  We chose a retreat with a spa and wellness classes simply so we could unplug and take deep breaths.  We did lots of yoga and Jay even took a class on arm balances and inversions (I had a massage).  We tried the Aqua therapy Circuit (alternating between hot and cold pools), which I thankfully never have to do again.  And at the end my head felt clearer, my energy was higher, and I was ready to be back.

It was such a good reminder of the necessity of Sabbath.  In Sabbath, God invites us to take a step back.  In Sabbath we remember that we are people with bodies that need to be cared for, fed, and nurtured.  Sabbath, we remember that it is not our job to make sure the earth continues to spin on its axis.  God can do just fine without us.

In the first creation story, God creates the first humans on the sixth day.  On the seventh day, God rests.  I often wonder, given the order of events in Genesis 1, whether humanity is the pinnacle of God’s creation, or whether Sabbath is the pinnacle of God’s creation.

In these last weeks of Lent, I pray that you will experience the kind of Sabbath to which God invites us all.

Grateful for Sabbath alongside all of you,

Mary Beth
